Position Focus:

Under the supervision of the Managing Director for Digital Collections Services (.75 FTE), the Technical Assistant 3 coordinates a broad range of activities and tasks related to the creation and preservation of digital objects. This position also reports to the Archivist for Law Collections (.25 FTE) to prepare archival materials for use, including processing, description, and digitization.

Based on a thorough understanding of project requirements, coordinate, perform, track, and ensure timely completion of project tasks. With specialized understanding of cultural heritage photography and FADGI (Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative) technical guidelines, evaluate the requirements of complex projects and determine appropriate technical specifications and approaches, in collaboration with the Digital Collections Librarian. Operate the Digital Transitions camera system imaging environment and GoldenThread NXT software. Work with the Digital Collections Librarian to establish, document, and implement imaging guidelines and workflow procedures. Work with rare book and archival collection material, conducting inventory, condition assessment, transfer, and preparation of material for digitization. Identify condition that may require conservation treatment and consult with librarians to determine appropriate handling and treatment required for safe digitization and transportation. Handle and pack material following conservation and preservation handling and packing guidelines. Assist with preparation for exhibits. Take primary responsibility for coordinating reproduction request intake and output fulfillment workflow across multiple departments. Perform in-house digitization project tasks including post-digitization image processing, QC, and file transfer using various digitization workflow management tools. Coordinate outsourcing of collection material for vendor digitization, as needed. Perform quality control (QC) of vendor deliverables inspecting for completeness and technical characteristics. Communicate effectively with digitization vendors to meet project requirements, ensuring project specifications are met; independently address, troubleshoot, and resolve issues. Derive, create, and update bibliographic records for digital objects according to established guidelines. Create structural metadata in compliance with developing standards. Search, assess, and report on bibliographic records for completeness, suitability, and accuracy. Compose succinct and clear business correspondence, communicating with and serving as a source of information to pertinent vendors and library staff throughout a project. Apply basic standards for archival storage and preservation of collection material, including reboxing and refoldering. Complete box and folder labeling as well as barcoding of archival and manuscript collections. Contribute to the development, review, and revision of departmental and unit manuals for archival description. Maintain inventory and care of department equipment and tools. May oversee student workers.

Essential Duties

1.  Serves as a principle source of information to clients who have business with or interest in the units.  2.  Serves as a principle source of information on specialized techniques and equipment problems. May perform a range of technical functions.  3.  Explains and demonstrates use of electronic security processes to students, staff, faculty, and visitors.  4.  Explains and describes use of specialized computerized digital conversion systems, scanners, imaging and camera equipment.  5.  Operates computerized security programs, systems and camera equipment.  6.  Reviews records for accuracy and reporting. Prepares reports. Determines methods and materials for production.  7.  Reviews unit products for accuracy and completeness.  8.  Collects, compiles and evaluates time and production data. Prepares reports. 9.  Performs technical functions incidental to access control and security systems. 10. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated understanding of digital photography or current digital imaging technologies. Demonstrated ability to independently manage a project to completion, multi-task, stay on schedule, meet deadlines, and fulfill project specifications. Must be able to prioritize and meet competing demands.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Demonstrated ability to follow and execute detailed instructions, with exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills. Must be adaptable and flexible to diverse and changing workflow processes.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Adept with technology in general, with the aptitude to learn and deploy a wide range of applications and tools. Adaptable and flexible to rapidly changing technology and technical skillsets. Ability to independently troubleshoot and provide solutions.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated ability to read and understand materials sufficiently to organize and describe collections, including hand-written texts. Ability to handle special collection, archival, rare book materials with care.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Demonstrated above-average or better oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population Exceptional critical thinking skills with the ability to exercise appropriate creativity, initiative, and agility in response to evolving situations.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with mass digitization applications and image analysis tools. Understanding of mass digitization processes, workflow, quality control for cultural heritage imaging. Experience in Sierra, Alma, or comparable integrated library system. Ability in copy cataloging and online bibliographic/database searching.
