Job Summary This position is responsible for management of the Operations Safety Programs in the
Gas Operations for TX&MN or
Gas and Electric Operations for IN&OH regions. Works with Gas Operations or Electric and Gas Operations to manage an enterprise safety program focused on continuous improvement. Assists in the integration of field and core safety programs and initiatives into the operating strategies in the company. Interacts with leaders in various departments and supports the implementation of corrective actions based on causal analysis for serious incident investigations. Assists in development and implementation of effective safety programs, policies, and safety culture tools. Promotes a safety culture whereby safe behavior is appropriately recognized and championed and unsafe behavior is rejected. Assists in the identification, evaluation and establishment of programs and processes that will help identify hazards and mitigate corresponding risk to establish a safe workplace in compliance with applicable regulations and laws issued by state and federal agencies.
Essential Functions - Provides technical leadership and functional guidance to ensure appropriate performance improvement initiatives are implemented.
- Works to ensure applicable safety and health policies and procedures are current.
- Ensures that employee safety training is consistent.
- Collaborates with operations management to determine appropriate performance improvement interventions.
- Coordinates efforts for workforce - leadership, collaboration and performance management.
- Directs assigned staff regarding employee safety and associated programs.
- Responsible for development and management of safety resources including by not limited to updating SharePoint site.
- Ensures that all safety training equipment and facilities are maintained properly and works with training staff on innovative training tools.
- Continues professional development by attending industry conferences and continuing education to maintain knowledge of trade, safety culture improvement techniques, and other pertinent industry information.
Essential Functions Continued - Ensures appropriate communications regarding employee safety processes are developed and disseminated.
- Ensures job site evaluations are conducted to promote safe work practices involving personnel, equipment and materials.
- Supports the Safety Management System (SMS) by recording all accident reports in a timely, complete, and accurate manner.
- Proactively identifies and appraises conditions that could produce accidents and evaluates potential extent of injuries resulting from accidents.
- Maintains liaison with outside organizations, such as local emergency response services, insurance agencies, mutual aid societies, and rescue teams to assure information exchange and mutual assistance.
- Ensures the organization complies with all federal, state and other regulatory requirements in safety, health, traffic/transportation, etc.
Education Description - Requires a Bachelor's degree in Safety or related technical field (e.g. Safety Industrial Relations, Industrial Engineering (Safety), Science, Business or Behavioral Sciences) from an accredited college or university.
• Will consider relevant job-related CenterPoint Energy experience for non-degree candidates.
Experience - Requires a minimum of ten (10) years of increasing responsibility in the areas of designing, implementing, and/or managing an effective safety program for electric/gas utility, oil/gas, heavy industrial or energy field.
• Certification as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals is a plus.
